Done and dusted
OK, that’s the end of my cycling “career”. 6.5 hrs mashing the pedals made my bottom hurt! However, loved the camaraderie on the road, weather was ideal, if a little warm!! Had to attack the hills with aggression on the single speed leaving many Lycra clad victims with red faces (but not, as it turned out, as red as mine!!) Speedy recovery for Gareth, taking himself out on a sign in the last km!! Talk about stiff! That first beer from Dave was the best I’ve ever had. So was the second. BIG, BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE OF MY 50 SPONSORS, TOGETHER WE RAISED WELL OVER $4K. THATS GOING TO HELP A LOT OF KIDS. Until next years ride...(NOT!!!!) Adrian.
AROUND THE BAY IN A DAY – NOT QUITE
After many years of listening to the stories around the lunch table of heroic feats of human endurance riding around the bay and other folklore, I thought ‘why should they have all the fun?’
So this year, the lure of the open road, the ‘full 210km lap of the bay’, proved too much. However, due to the two operations on my back last year, the application was rejected by the SHRC (Spinal Health Review Committee i.e. my lovely ladies at home) so I have relented and instead signed up for the 135km, Geelong to Melbourne – via Queenscliff ride on the 7th October.
Not having ridden for many, many years I dusted the old mountain bike off and went for a few rides up and down the rail trail to make sure I could still balance on a bike. So far, so good. In a few short rides I have been able to find that ‘happy’ place between nausea, angina and the narrowing of vision while maintaining some manner of forward progress.
But ride it on what? No road bike, no riding gear - then it came to me “Of course, I’ll use my Refinery bike and do it in my work gear, it’ll be like I’m fully sponsored!”
Really, how hard could it be – it’s just like riding from my office to the canteen and back - for 135 days. Also, being a single speed I won’t waste any time changing gears! And if the road catches alight I’ll be safe in my fire retardant clothing. This really is an excellent idea!
Around the Bay is all about raising funds to help transform the lives of over 16,000 disadvantaged children, assisting them with their education.
Viva Energy has been participating in the Round Around the Bay for many years. This year, more than 45 Viva Energy employees are participating in Ride-Around the Bay, making it a team fundraising with activity. Given the Smith family are a Viva Energy community partner and more than five employees are involved, the business matches funds raised, dollar for dollar, (up-to $10,000).
