Around the Bay - 300km ( 323 km total)
All the prior event training paid off although conditions were perfect which helped, if ever they can be for riding 300km in my first go at Around The Bay or anywhere near that distance. It was definitely a journey into the unknown!
We set off from Albert Park at 5.30am with daylight saving robbing us of 1 hours sleep. Which is never good sleep the night before an event anyway…..
Tailwinds most of the way assisted in being able to complete the ride in a shade under 9 hours and get the 10am ferry with 10 minutes to spare! Although this meant conditions were very fast and easy to blow out / bonk. I definitely paid for early endeavours in the almost 1000m climbing at the 180km mark. The climb mostly done alone, up Arthurs Seat, Flinders and back to Red Hill was hard ( the course profile we were given in no way showed how much climbing was to come). Although I recall a client telling me there was a lot!
Finding a fast group back at Mount Martha who had punctured earlier in the day gave me the energy to make it back to Albert Park and tow me most of the 60km way home! Although not technically a race, people still pushed their limits and were encouraging each other! Somehow I officially finished in 2nd place overall out of 417 entrants ( I didn’t stop for a break outside of the ferry or have any punctures ?). Not giving up and digging deep in the last bit alone in the hills really paid off to find those quicker riders ahead! Can’t recommend the event enough to improve your fitness, raise awareness for great causes and meet some great people along the way to share the experience and pain with before, during and the feeling ( +cold beers) of accomplishment with after the event. RIDE DAY TIP: If you do this ride in the future make sure you keep well away from the hard shoulder on the freeway going west, 100’s of people with punctures!

June 2018 - 300km Around The Bay in a Day.
Has been a great start, weekends riding with Richard Dunlop, Nicolas Tocu , Tim Venn & Barry Warwick to help us all together acheive our goals !
Have been ensuring have been getting in a 120km, 150km , 175km and a 200km weekend rides in the last month, interspersed of course with coffees, breakfasts and lunches!
Midweeks have included racing indoors @Spinlabs in Hampton with a few like minded people to build up the upper end aerobic system! All good fun and we are motivating each other. Conscious the Half Marathon also coming up end of July so keen not to over do things and get ill!
